Man Cave Ministry History (Stephen Ray Ward)

It began in the Fall of 2013 in Asheville, NC - when I (Stephen) went on a men’s retreat with our church.  At the end of the retreat was a time for men to step up and share during testimony time.  After hearing some of their everyday struggles of where they were at, I came home and my heart was broke for them.

We currently had a life group at that time that had some men in it that was struggling as well. Chris Ramsey and myself had been talking that these men needed something more to help encourage them.

Then on day when me and my buddy Scott Shields was walking at the Y, he shared he had seen a video from Andy Stanley titled “Right in the Eye”  As we both were talking about the struggles these men were facing, he stated he wish he could get some of these men together to watch the series.

At that time it hit me that I had a small Man Cave so I told him we could do this.  As we talked about it, we knew we didn’t want to try to do on a weekend so we came up with Tuesday evening.  I knew if men went home after work there was a good chance they may not come back.  So we decided we would serve them a meal so they could come straight from work, just as they were.

So we reached out to a hand full of men and asked if they would come for six weeks to go through this series.  On December 10, 2013 was our first time meeting.

At the end of six weeks, they asked, ”what’s next?”  So we told them to come back next week and we would see.

Fast forward to today, and we have currently been meeting each and every week for the past five years and have only missed four Tuesdays sense we started averaging 50-55 men each week.

At the end of 2018, we have served over 9100 meals.  We have launched 3 other Man Caves.  One in Gaffney, SC, Pikeville, KY, and Burkesville, Ky. Today there are locations also in Columbia, SC and Waterloo, SC.
